Neighborhood Food Champion Application

A Neighborhood Food Champion is an individual seeking to create opportunities for their community to improve its food security and access. Each Neighborhood Food Champion will receive comprehensive training to sustain a community-based project and a project award for your food-related project. 
Project Award Opportunity: $2000

  • Applications are being accepted Nov 1st-30th 2020
  • The program starts February 2021- Tentative on Tuesday evenings - Classroom or Virtual learning

We look to support projects who directly address equitable food access for communities in Marion County.
Participation in this program requires:

  • Interest in the food issues of your community.
  • Attendance at a weekly 2-hour workshop for 12 weeks.
  • Identified food-related projects to work with.
  • 16 and older (Under 18 must have permission from a guardian)
  • Proposal submission after the 12week program, and Final Report
  • A 3-4 minute presentation to other participants in the program and members of the community
  • Site Visit

We are looking for projects that:

  • Demonstrates an innovative and creative approach to an ongoing need in the community
  • Demonstrates a connection with residents and organizations in their neighborhood
  • Seek long term solutions to address equitable food access
  • A clear understanding of the specific needs of their neighborhood

The workshop portion of the project is for 12 consecutive weeks.
You will not receive your project award if you miss more than two sessions.
Sessions include:

  • Understanding the Food System (food waste, co-opts, farms, gardens, stores)
  • Advocacy and Policy
  • Developing community partners
    • Volunteer management
    • Nutrition Basics - Incorporating nutrition education into your project
    • Procurement – Understanding the business of food
    • Developing a community garden, farmer’s market
    • Grant writing basics
    • Evaluating our success
    • Social Determinants of Health
  • Marketing and Social Media
  • Business 101 For Profit
  • Business 101 Nonprofit

A committee of community members will make the selection of new Neighborhood Food Champions. The Office of Public Health and Safety and the Center of Wellness for Urban Women will not be a part of this selection process.
